Rooster Rubber Mulch: Answers to Our Most Common Questions

How long does rubber mulch last?

One advantage of rubber mulch is its longevity. The rubber itself has an exceptionally long lifespan—measured in decades—because it doesn’t decompose, rot, or break down like wood mulch.

What most people are really asking about, though, is color retention. Rooster Rubber mulch is coated with UV-resistant paint, which is designed to withstand sunlight and outdoor exposure. Over time, natural fading will occur depending on factors like:

  • Amount of direct sunlight
  • Level of foot traffic
  • Use by pets or playground activity

On average, customers can expect the paint to retain its base color for 5 to 12 years. , making rubber mulch a long-term, low-maintenance solution compared to traditional mulch, which requires frequent replacement.

How much rubber mulch do I need for a residential playground?

The amount of rubber mulch needed depends on square footage and desired depth, both of which are directly tied to playground safety.

The height of the playground equipment determines a safe depth:

  • 4 inches of rubber mulch provides fall protection for equipment up to 9 feet high
  • 3 inches is typically sufficient for most residential playgrounds with equipment up to 6 feet high
  • 6 inches is commonly required for public playgrounds, depending on state regulations

Choosing the right depth ensures proper cushioning and impact absorption, helping reduce the risk of injury while kids play.

questions about rubber mulch

Are rubber nuggets safe for playgrounds and play surfaces?

Yes—rubber mulch is considered safe for playground and recreational use.

Multiple scientific studies funded by governmental organizations have evaluated recycled rubber used in play surfaces. These studies have consistently found no significant health risks to children, adults, coaches, referees, or spectators from exposure to recycled rubber materials.

A study in March of 2025 by the Pesticide and Environmental Toxicology Branch of the California Environmental Protection Agency concluded that recycled rubber nuggets used in play surfaces do not pose significant health concerns, based on available data.

Their research, combined with decades of real-world use, shows that rubber mulch is a trusted choice for families, schools, and communities.

Should I use a weed barrier under my playground rubber mulch?

Yes—installing a weed barrier is highly recommended and provides several important benefits.

We suggest using an 8 oz. geotextile fabric, which helps the following:

  • Applying a weed barrier helps prevent weeds and grass from growing into the play area.
  • It stops mud and soil from migrating up into the rubber mulch.
  • Weed barrier creates a stable foundation, allowing the rubber mulch to settle evenly and maintain a consistent depth for cushioning.

A couple of quick installation tips: mow the area as low as you can before laying the fabric, make sure it lies flat with no wrinkles, and use sod staples to keep everything in place while you work.

A proper weed barrier not only improves appearance but also extends the life and performance of your rubber mulch installation.

Does rubber mulch get hot?

This is a common concern, especially for playgrounds in warmer climates—the good news is that rubber mulch remains comfortable to the touch in summer conditions.

Because there’s space between the rubber nuggets, heat doesn’t build up as easily as it does on solid surfaces. From what customers have experienced, lighter and darker colors feel about the same, even on hot days.
