FAQ for Commercial Applications

  • Is Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ for landscapes and playgrounds safe for children and pets?
Yes it is safe. Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. There have been many studies done by the government and third parties proving that it is safe.
  • Does Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ blow or wash away in a heavy rain?
No, Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ is too heavy to be significantly affected by normal high winds or heavy rains. Premium Rubber Mulch™ is made from 100 percent recycled truck tires; it is 5 times denser than wood mulch and heavier than rubber mulches made from passenger tires.
  • Does Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ require any maintenance?
Minimum maintenance is required. You can use a leaf blower to remove leaves and other light weight yard debris. For playground applications, it is very important to level the rubber surface on a regular basis to ensure a minimum 4” depth is maintained for up to a 9 foot fall height. This regular maintenance can be done with a large leaf rake.
  • Is Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ harmful to plants?
Plants thrive under Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ which helps the ground retain moisture. Our mulch does not retain water and will not promote mold or fungus growth like organic mulch will.
  • Does Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ have a smell?
No, our colored Premium Rubber Mulch™ is sealed which removes any odor.
  • Is Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ beneficial in changing climates?
Yes, Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ does not absorb water and will not freeze. Water and nutrients can penetrate into the soil without the risk of pest and mold or fungus growth. Our Premium Rubber Mulch™ keeps the soil 10 degrees cooler in the summer and 10 degrees warmer in the winter.
  • Does Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ meet playground safety standards?
Yes, Rooster Rubber Premium Rubber Mulch™ is IPEMA and ADA certified. Premium Rubber Mulch™ also meets ASTM F1292-04 Standard Specification for Impact Attenuation of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment at a 4” compacted depth for up to an 11 foot fall height.
  • What are the pros and cons of weed barriers?
Some people like a weed barrier and some do not. I will say this – I think it depends on the type of plants, flowers, bushes and, whether they are in direct sun and for how long. The greater amount of sun exposure (heat) - the greater stress on the plantings. Weed barriers do a good job of retaining moisture and lessening heat, but they also inhibit the evaporation of moisture which I believe helps cool plants. We have customers who have used our weed barrier, but it is an 8 ounce, black Geotextile fabric – very, very tough and it comes in 15 foot widths, which makes it cumbersome to ‘cut in’ around existing plants, bushes, etc. If you decide to use a weed barrier, I suggest using a good quality, 4 foot wide weed barrier from your local hardware or garden store (they are permeable, allowing moisture to travel both ways and come in 4 foot widths making them much easier to handle). To date, the only weed I have received feedback about, that will grow through our weed barrier (or any other weed barrier) is the nutsedge. It has a very sharp, pointed leaf that penetrates the weed barrier. It has to be sprayed, not picked out, because it has below ground, linear runners that contain seeds that will eventually germinate. There are a couple of very effective sprays (called Manage) that will eliminate nutsedge with repeated spraying (and will not harm your plants or the rubber mulch). The other preventative measure that I suggest is to cast Preen (non-toxic) over the entire area in early spring and summer (inhibits germination of weeds). Preen will not harm plantings or our rubber mulch.
